Character: Eric Cord
York, a native of Chicago's South Side, studied marketing for two years at the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater before returning to Chicago to study acting under Edward Kaye-Martin.
He made his professional debut at the Wisdom Bridge Theatre, appearing in Picnic, Loss of Roses, Career, and Golden Boy. In 1983, York relocated to Hollywood and began working steadily in television, with guest roles on series including 21 Jump Street; the mystery drama Murder, She Wrote; Sydney; Family Ties; Newhart; Hunter; and Arthur Hailey's Hotel. He subsequently starred as Eric Cord in the horror-action series Werewolf and is today best known for his long-running portrayal of Mac Scorpio on General Hospital.
York's feature film work includes roles in Steel and Lace, House of the Rising Sun, The Bear (a biography of University of Alabama coach Bear Bryant, starring Gary Busey), and Chattanooga Choo Choo. During the filming of Chattanooga Choo Choo, he met his future wife, Vicki, a casting director. The couple married on August 15, 1986, and have one daughter, Schyler.
Discussing His Role
York, brought on just one week before cameras rolled on the two-hour pilot, takes on the role of Eric Cord. The actor voices no dissatisfaction with the accelerated casting process.
"Werewolf was an opportunity to work as an actor. I know I'm playing second banana to the werewolf, and that's fine with me. The reason I can live with that is because the scripts are taking great pains with my character. As a result, I'm getting to do more than just one-dimensional setups for the werewolf transformations. The funniest thing is that Eric winds up naked at the end of each werewolf transformation, but always seems to find a pair of pants nearby to put on. I keep telling people that Eric is always prepared. He left home with a ton of luggage."
