Overview

Eric Cord, a college graduate student, sees his life take a shocking turn when his best friend, Ted, begs him to end his life with a pistol loaded with a silver bullet—claiming he is a werewolf. Skeptical and concerned for his friend’s sanity, Eric refuses, until Ted transforms before his eyes and attacks. Eric is forced to defend himself, killing Ted, but not before being bitten and inheriting the curse himself.

To free himself, Eric learns he must find and kill “the source of the bloodline,” the mysterious and elusive Captain Janos Skorzeny. Eric sets out on a cross-country hunt for the swaggering Skorzeny, even as he is pursued by determined bounty hunter Alamo Joe Rogan. Though Eric now transforms into a werewolf, his affliction comes with a strange silver lining—he targets only criminals, wrongdoers, and other supernatural threats, sparing innocent people from harm.

Eric ultimately succeeds in killing Skorzeny, only to discover a darker truth: the true origin of his curse is Nicholas Remy, a powerful, cunning, and remarkably preserved werewolf more than 2,000 years old. Eric’s quest for a cure continues, but viewers never learned his fate—the series was canceled shortly after Remy’s introduction.

Werewolf distinguished itself with a brooding atmosphere and impressively intense special effects crafted by Rick Baker and Greg Cannom. The FOX Network heavily promoted the series during the fall of 1987, even airing deadpan announcements encouraging viewers to call a toll-free number if they had spotted a werewolf. The campaign generated more than 400,000 calls. Later segments featured parapsychology instructor Dr. Stephen Kaplan, who provided tongue-in-cheek information about werewolves, further enhancing the show’s cult appeal.
