Grace sits at the officer’s desk, spinning yet another wild tale while the officer pretends to file a report. She’s harmless, kind,
and known by everyone at the precinct—not for crime, but for imagination. When her daughter arrives yet again to collect her, Grace’s
face falls. The police smile politely, knowing none of what she claims has ever been real.
That night, Grace eats bread alone in an alley, unknowingly beside Eric, who is ragged and starving. She offers him a piece without hesitation,
and he devours it gratefully before slipping away. But two thugs corner him, demanding money he doesn’t have. They beat him just as Grace
passes by, and when they turn on her, they don’t get the chance to strike. From the pile of garbage, Eric’s wolf form erupts and incapacitates
them with brutal, decisive force. Then, recognizing Grace as no threat, the wolf simply moves on, leaving her stunned but unharmed.
Eric wakes the next morning and steals fresh clothes from a line, but freezes when he hears officers approaching. They speak about Grace—one of
them the same man who listens to her stories week after week. He feels guilt over her daughter having Grace committed and had hoped to find
evidence to support Grace’s claim this time. But nothing in the alley proves her werewolf encounter, and she is written off once more as delusional.
Believing himself responsible, Eric approaches Grace’s well-to-do daughter and pleads that her mother has been unjustly institutionalized.
The woman refuses, insisting Grace is exactly where she belongs. This time her fantasy involved a werewolf, and that was the line crossed.
Determined to help, Eric takes work as an orderly at Galen Mental Hospital. There, he discovers the truth behind the walls: some staff treat
the patients with cruelty masked as care. He finds Grace and gently coaxes her to admit that most of her stories are inventions—but not this one.
She did see the werewolf. She saw him. Eric assures her he intends to help her get out.
But word spreads that Eric is asking questions, threatening to expose the staff for malpractice. Before he can act, they restrain him in a
straightjacket and toss him into a padded room to silence him. Their mistake is believing restraint applies to a creature like him. The wolf
tears free from canvas, leather, and lock. When he breaks out, so can the patients—and the institution is left to face the consequences of the
monster they created, and the one they attempted to cage.
